Ingenuity engine delivers a wide range of shots in 2D and 3D video, which takes you to develop fantasy Perry journey through his imagination.  "Wide Awake" starts Perry completing the video for "California Gurls." When he gets to his dressing room, he falls into another world. A magical place he meets himself and two face obstacles, together with the younger version, even if they do develop a 3D labyrinth.

"All of the graphics, we have created the" Wide Awake "was to start in the 3D elements," explains that David Lebensfeld, ingenuity engine, Creative Director. "A fast-paced music videos such as this, we are usually a lot of 2D elements and spend most of our time, composition, but the" Wide Awake "all smoke, particle effects and matte paintings were created in 3D and rendered in both eyes, which require considerably more work at the same time, the tight schedule."

Ingenuity engine delivered more than 140 shots in less than three weeks, matte paintings, set extensions, various smoke, fog, Fireworks and sparks effects and CG elements, such as the flock of CG butterflies that are flying off Perry's dress.

"To create a flock can be modeled by a series of unique butterflies, a number of unresolved reference photography," says Lebensfeld. "Then these individual butterflies were rigged and animated the original during the flight, which was complemented by the particle system to give each a butterfly, its own unique animation and flight path. The hero of the foreground of butterflies were hand animated the transition to the next scene and take advantage of we were working with a 3D depth "

For the layout of the "Wide Awake" was made in Foundry's NUKE and NUKEX, Andersson Technologies SynthEyes and tracking was completed (tm). The CG was created in 3ds Max from Autodesk (r) (r) Sitni Sati smoke and Thinkbox software Krakatoa (tm).

"We are fortunate to have a long history of DNA. Working closely with Tony and the DNA team allowed us to visualize and realize they imagined, it seems, "adds Grant Miller, ingenuity engine, Creative Director. "The music video industry, due to the nature of the fast pace of speed is of the essence. We are very proud of, that could not only gives a message of this caliber and very tight schedule, but also the amount of work on the stereo. Talking about that, "Wide Awake" is going to set the benchmark for 3D music videos and I think you're taking that set the bar really high. "

Sennheiser is a Winner at the MTV Video Music Awards

Nearly 12 million viewers of the MTV Video Music Awards, telecast from the NOKIA Theatre L.A. live in Los Angeles on September 12, saw Sennheiser  microphones and wireless technology deliver much of the excitement at the celebrity arrival area, on the main stage, and across both the indoor and outdoor performance areas. The event showcased a mix of established artists and fresh faces, including Eminem, Rihanna, Paramore, Linkin Park, Florence + the Machine, Drake, will.i.am and Nicki Minaj, among many others.

Host Chelsea Handler, the first woman to host the VMAs solo since 1994 and only the second woman to ever front the show, used a Sennheiser wireless microphone, as did all presenters. Wireless specialists Soundtronics supplied one dozen channels of true-diversity receivers, including EM 3532s, along with SKM 5000 and SKM 5200 wireless handheld transmitters.

Sennheiser was also featured in many of the night’s performances. Eminem, one of the big award winners, kicked off with “Not Afraid,” featuring the Detroit rapper and his hype man, Denaun, both using chrome SKM 5200 handhelds with MD 5235 capsules. Their performance segued into “Love The Way You Lie,” with guest Rihanna singing into her SKM 2000 wireless vocal mic with MMK 965-1 capsule, paired with an EM 2050 receiver.

Florence + the Machine featured the UK singer delivering the band’s multi-VMA-nominated “Dog Days Are Over” into an SKM 5200 with a Neumann KK 105 capsule. Ian Laughton, FOH engineer for Florence + the Machine, tried various mics on the singer prior to the band’s big production tour earlier this year. “It was immediately apparent that there was only one mic for her, and that was the SKM 5200 wireless mic with a Neumann 105 capsule,” he says. “The clarity and bottom end was phenomenal. You could not get this from any other mic. Florence immediately fell in love with every aspect of this microphone, and we got our friends at Sennheiser UK to ‘bling’ it up for us with gold plating.”

Canadian rapper Drake, using an SKM 5200/ MD 5235 combination, performed “Fancy” alongside Mary J. Blige and Swizz Beatz. Hayley Williams joined hot new hip-hop artist and producer B.o.B for a rendition of his second single, “Airplanes,” before she joined her band, Paramore, for “The Only Exception.” Williams sported her signature bright orange SKM 2000, outfitted with an MMD 935-1 capsule.

“It’s a proven mic that’s probably going to become an industry standard for wireless,” says Paramore FOH engineer Jason Decter of the SKM 2000 vocal mic. “The wireless RF and the scanning feature are second to none. You can do broadcast, recording, or live audio with it. It’s a versatile mic. And for Hayley’s vocal range in particular, when you throw it in the mix with the guitars you’re not constantly cutting or boosting frequencies trying to get the life back into the vocal. It’s just natural. The presence is there, the response is right there, and it’s just crystal clear in the PA.”

There was plenty of activity outside the NOKIA Theatre, too, with a pre-show performance from the “white carpet” area featuring another custom SKM 2000, paired with an EM 2050 receiver, when will.i.am joined Nicki Minaj for “Check It Out.” Late in the show, a taped performance by Linkin Park from the Griffith Observatory made spectacular use of the location and the setting sun as the band previewed their brand-new album using wired e 865 vocal mics. The band recently also acquired a 2000 series system comprising SKM 2000 handhelds with MME 865-1 capsules and EM 2050 receivers.

ATK AudioTek, production provider for the event, supplied 12 channels of Sennheiser G2 wireless monitors along with A 5000-CP antennas. Sennheiser supported ATK with additional channels of 2000 series wireless monitors for use on the show. Klaus Landsberg, working with Gary Long, utilized Neumann KM 184s and Sennheiser MKH 416 shotguns to capture the enthusiastic audience at the NOKIA Theatre. Veteran broadcast engineer Jay Vicari was responsible for the overall audio mix.

Ingenuity Engine and Katy Perry are "Wide Awake" for 3D Music Video

An artist driven and owned visual effects studio - completed extensive work on the 3D music video for "Wide Awake," which was written for the 3D "Katy Perry: Part of Me" film which opened on July 5. The video was directed by Tony T. Datis of production company DNA. Ingenuity Engine delivered a wide range of shots in both 2D and 3D for the elaborate fantasy video that takes Perry on a journey through her imagination.  "Wide Awake" begins with Perry completing the video for "California Gurls." When she gets back to her dressing room, she falls into another world. In that magical place, she meets a younger version of herself, and the two face obstacles together while they make their way through an elaborate 3D labyrinth.

"All of the visuals we created for "Wide Awake" had to start as 3D elements," explains David Lebensfeld, Ingenuity Engine creative director. "With fast-paced music videos like this, we generally use a lot of 2D elements and spend most of our time in compositing, but for "Wide Awake" all of the smoke, particle effects, and matte paintings had to be created in 3D and rendered for both eyes, which required significantly more work in the same tight schedule."

Ingenuity Engine delivered over 140 shots in less than three weeks, including matte paintings, set extensions, various smoke, fog, fireworks and sparks effects, as well as CG elements, including a flock of CG butterflies that fly off Perry's dress. "To create the flock we modeled several unique butterflies, using reference photography taken on set," says Lebensfeld. "Then these individual butterflies were rigged and animated with an initial flight cycle, which was augmented in a particle system to give each butterfly its own unique animation and flight path. Hero foreground butterflies were hand animated to facilitate the transition to the next scene and to take advantage of the depth we were working with in 3D."

Compositing for "Wide Awake" was done in The Foundry's NUKE and NUKEX, and tracking was completed in Andersson Technologies' SynthEyes(tm). The CG was created in Autodesk(r) 3ds Max(r) along with Sitni Sati's Fume and Thinkbox Software's Krakatoa(tm).

"We are lucky to have a long history with DNA. Working closely with Tony and the DNA team allowed us to visualize and then execute the look they imagined," adds Grant Miller, Ingenuity Engine creative director. "Because of the fast-paced nature of the music video industry, speed is essential. We are very proud that we were not only able to deliver this caliber and quantity of work with a very tight post schedule, but in stereo as well. There is talk that "Wide Awake" is going to set the benchmark for 3D music videos, and I think they're setting that bar really high."

The video is currently airing worldwide and can be seen at http://www.katyperry.com. Panasonic will showcase the 3D version of "Wide Awake" at consumer electronics trade shows, including IFA in Berlin as well in stores with Panasonic VIERA TVs on display around the world starting this fall.
