Shakira, who was born Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll in Barranquilla, Colombia on February 2, 1977, has been singing and performing on the international stage since 1990.

Shakira first started her career in Colombia, where she successfully built her reputation. It wasn't until 2001 when she first broke through the international music scene with her English single, "Wherever, Whenever." Since then she has inspired fans around the world and today, continues to live her life as a leading Latin pop princess. MEET THE AUTHOR

Debbie Jabbour is a psychologist, writer, musician, mother and grandmother; passionate for family, home, and country; always learning and ready to embrace the power of change. After enjoying many years as a professional musician, she returned to university to earn a Masters in Applied Psychology, minor in Communications, and is now starting a new career as a Registered Psychologist. For many years Debbie wrote a regular column on academic, political, health, and general interest issues, and now writes freelance on a range of topics. Canadian by birth, she has lived and traveled in Latin America and speaks fluent Spanish. The quality of Debbie's writing is enhanced by her broad life experience, insight into human nature, and research expertise; and she approaches topics with a sense of humor and a keen interest in people, history, politics, culture and the arts. Over the years Debbie has experienced both the best and worst in life, and has developed a personal philosophy rooted in Nietzsche: That which does not kill me makes me stronger.

While Shakira has yet to turn 40 years old, she has been honored with awards from organizations around the world to acknowledge her major accomplishments in her 20+ year career. To this day, Shakira is still recognized as the highest-selling Colombian artist ever with a total of 60 million albums having been sold around the world. Behind Gloria Estefan, she is the second-most successful female singer of Latin descent.

Shakira has received a total of 10 Grammy awards, including two U.S. awards and eight Latin awards. Additionally, she was nominated for a Golden Globe and has also won 12 Billboard Latin Music Awards. At the 2011 Latin Grammys, she was recognized as 2011's Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year.

Along with many of her albums, Shakira has received awards for several of her pop singles, including "Hips Don't Lie." Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems acknowledged that this song was the most-played pop song in one week in radio history for America. In total, DJs across the country played it a total of 9,637 times. Yahoo! has noted that "Hips Don't Lie" is the best-selling single of the last decade.
